Remy Mercer-Slomoff - Health and Illness

In 2014 Remy joined a cohort of 45 students in the UCSF Global Health Master’s Program as a Master’s student at the brand new Mission Bay UCSF campus. Remy is studying Global Health with an emphasis on reproductive health, breast feeding, contraception, and community health education in West Africa.
After graduating from UC Berkeley in 2011, Remy spent many months traveling throughout South East Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos). She rented an apartment on the island of Koh Chang, Thailand and became a Scuba Dive Master. She spent 4 months teaching scuba diving and working on a dive boat. After moving back to the states, Remy applied for and was accepted into Teach for America in Miami-Dade county, Florida. In May 2012, Remy moved to Miami and became a 9th grade English and reading teacher at Miami Norland Senior High School in Miami Gardens. While living her life as “Ms. Slomoff” for two years, Remy continued to devote time to two of her passions: health education and community service work. As an advisor for the Health Information Project, Remy trained a group of junior and senior students to be health educators and disseminate a comprehensive health curriculum to the 9th grade students. This experience reinvigorated her love of health education, community health, and specifically reproductive health.
